With the bat and the ball, Islamabad United dethroned Lahore Qalandars from the top of the points table in the latest match of the sixth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) at Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Sunday.
After winning the toss, Islamabad United set Lahore Qalandars a 153-run target.
Lahore was looking like it would cruise to victory at the beginning of the chase when Sohail Akhtar and Fakhar Zaman opened the innings and took their side to 55/0. Fawad Ahmed, however, bowled the Qalandars captain for 34 on the final ball of the powerplay.
After five balls, Zeeshan Ashraf followed his skipper to the dugout. A mix-up between him and Zaman led to him being run out. Lahore was 58/2 when the wicket fell.
A double-wicket over by Mohammad Musa turned the tide in Islamabad’s favor.
Musa, in his 11th over, outstruck Mohammad Hafeez and Ben Dunk for two runs, lifting his team into a tie.
Ben Dunk also fell after edging a ball to the wicketkeeper, while Mohammad Hafeez was caught at point by Hussain Talat.
Musa took the critical wicket of Zaman in his 13th over, when asked to bowl. When he tried to hit for a six at third man, he was caught.
Shadab bowled the 14th over and took the wickets of Tim David and Rashid Khan to expose Lahore’s tail.
Shaheen Shah Afridi and James Faulkner were sent back to the pavilion during the 14th over. The dismissals put Lahore at 100/9 at the end of the 15th over.
Islamabad needed one wicket to win, while the Qalandars needed 53 runs from 30 balls at that point. United secured victory by taking Lahore’s last wicket at the second ball of the 18th over to wrap up the game.
Islamabad United now sits atop the table, while Lahore is at number 2.
Besides Musa’s three wickets, Fawad and Shadab each took two, and Ali Khan took one.
Islamabad United’s innings
began with a 123-run partnership between Asif Ali and Iftikhar Ahmed that took Islamabad United from 20/5 to 152/7.
Shadab hoped that his openers would give his team a good start when he chose to bat first, but the Lahore bowlers prevented them from doing so.
Shaheen Shah Afridi dismissed Usman Khawaja with the third ball of the match. The United opener was hoping to flick the ball towards midwicket but instead, he edged the ball to Qalandars wicketkeeper Ben Dunk.
Later, James Faulkner took the wickets of Rohail Nazir, Colin Munro, and Hussain Talat to put Islamabad at 20/4 at the end of the powerplay.
Shaheen and Faulkner’s magic with the ball convinced Haris Rauf to join the party. The wicket of Shadab was taken by Rauf to push United to 20/5.
United’s batting was led by Asif Ali and Iftikhar Ahmed despite losing five wickets. United passed 143 runs with the help of a quick-fire 50 by Asif.
They also set a record for the highest sixth-wicket partnership in PSL history. In the 18th over, Asif was dismissed for 123 runs. The batsman was dismissed for 75 runs.
The second last ball of the innings was caught by Rashid Khan at long-off to prevent Ahmed from reaching his half-century.
Shaheen and Rauf took two wickets each for Lahore, while Faulkner finished with three wickets.
