Pakistan Super League

The Pakistan Super League is the premier domestic T20 League owned by the Pakistan Cricket Board. The first edition of the league commenced in 2016 and in 2019, the league is going to hold its 4th Edition. The league is abbreviated as ‘PSL’ and also known as ‘HBL PSL’  as per the title sponsorship association with the Habib Bank Limited.

PSL Franchises

The first season of the league featured five teams sold on the basis of franchise model. The teams were denominated after the cities in Pakistan as is the norm with other T20 leagues around the world.

The PSL franchises are:

The sixth team, Multan Sultans was integrated to the franchises in 2018. However, for 2019 PCB ended their contract with Multan Sultans and is probing for a bidder for what it calls ‘The Sixth Team’. The management of the team, meanwhile, has been surmounted by the PCB and the squad for The Sixth Team was finalized under PCB patronage in the recently held PSL Draft.

The Franchise Owners

Karachi Kings:

Salman Iqbal, the CEO of ARY Group bought the Karachi franchise for $26 million. The ARY group owns many businesses including Television Network in Pakistan. The franchise Karachi Kings is also the official partner of ARY Television.

Lahore Qalandars:

Qatar Lubricants won the bid for the Lahore franchise for $25 million. Fawad Rana is the owner of the Lahore Qalandars franchise on behalf of Qatar Lubricants.

Peshawar Zalmi:

Haier Group in Pakistan, a consumer electronics and home appliances company who are already dealing with the PCB to sponsor domestic cricket, acquired Peshawar for $16 million. Javed Afridi of Haier Group is the owner of the Peshawar Zalmi franchise.

Islamabad United:

Leonine Global Sports brought the Islamabad United franchise for $15 million.

Quetta Gladiators:

Nadeem Omar of Omar Associate, a Karachi-based holding company with various businesses, purchased the Quetta franchise for $11 million.

Multan Sultans:

Multan Sultans was purchased by Schon properties, a real estate developer group from Dubai.

The Sixth Team:

Post the contract cancellation the Multan Sultans is now renamed as the Sixth Team. It is believed that Ali Tareen, son of Jahangir Tareen – famous politician and businessman, is set to purchase the franchise.

International Players Participation

The tournament was played in UAE for the first season and magnetized many international players. After a successful first season there were calls for moving the tournament to Pakistan. Cricket in Pakistan, however, was suspended due to the assailment on the Sri Lankan team in 2011 and the international players were not inclined to travel. The PCB, therefore, hosted the complete tournament in UAE in 2017 but held the final in Lahore, Pakistan. The matches in Pakistan were further incremented in psl 2018 when two eliminators and the final were hosted in Pakistan.

The league was able to attract big names like Kevin Pietersen, Shane Watson, Chris Gayle, Darren Sammy, Dwayne Bravo, Kumar Sangakkara, Brendon Mccullum and most recently A B Devilliers.

A B De Villiers has recently been drafted in by the Lahore Qalandars franchise in the PSL Draft held November 2018 and would be part of the 2019 edition of PSL.

PCB has decided that eight matches would take place in Pakistan in 2019.

Pakistan Super League Editions

The fourth edition of the league will take place in 2019. The tournament is scheduled to start on February 14 and the final would be held on March 17.

The editions with the winning team are listed below:

PSL 2016 won by Islamabad United under the captaincy of Misbah ul Haq

PSL 2017 won by Peshawar Zalmi under the captaincy of Darren Sammy

PSL 2018 won by Islamabad United under the captaincy of Misbah ul Haq

PSL 2019 to be played from Feb 14 to Mar 17, 2019

Tournament Format

Each team plays each other twice in the league stage of the tournament in a round robin format. Following the group stage the top four teams qualify for the playoff stage of the tournament. In the group stage, two points are awarded for a victory, one for a no result and none for a loss. In the event of tied scores after both teams faced their quota of overs, a super over is utilized to determine the match winner. The four teams topping the points table qualify for the playoffs.

The playoffs are played as under:

The first playoff is a qualifier played between the top two teams on the points table. The winning teams qualifies for the final.

The second playoff is an eliminator played between the third and fourth team on the points table. The losing team is eliminated from the tournament whereas the winning teams moves on to the third playoff.

The third playoff victor plays the final with the winner of the qualifier.

Player Awards

The PSL player with the best performance in the tournament is awarded Player of the series. A man of the match award is given in each match to the best performing player.

In the 2017 season the following awards were added to the PSL:

Green cap and Hanif Mohammad award for best batsman of the season

Maroon cap and Fazal Mehmood award for best bowler of the season

Imtiaz Ahmed award for best wicket-keeper of the season

The Green cap was won by Kamran Akmal of Peshawar Zalmi and Luke Ronchi of Islamabad United in 2017 and 2018 respectively.

The maroon cap holders for 2017 and 2018 were Sohail Khan of Karachi Kings and Faheem Ashraf of Islamabad United.

The Imtiaz Ahmed award was won by Kamran Akmal in 2017 and the veteran Kumar Sangakkara claimed the award in 2018.

Commercial Rights and Sponsorship

The commercial rights for the first five franchises were sold for USD 93 Million for a period of 10 years. The market value of PSL in 2018 was estimated at US$1 billion, according to Arif Habib.

As per PCB the inaugural season of the PSL yielded profits of US$2.6 million.

Habib Bank Limited of Pakistan was awarded the denomination sponsorship for three years for USD 5 Million. HBL renewed the sponsorship at the terminus of its three years’ tenure at a value of USD 14.3 Million.

PSL Season 4

Cricket fans are excited about the fourth edition of the Pakistan Super League. There are six teams participating in PSL. Among 6 teams, Islamabad United is one of the best and consistent PSL team with 2 titles in their belt. Peshawar Zalmi has also won one edition of PSL and they are the second best team of the tournament. Darren Sammy is a captain of Peshawar Zalmi and one of the top foreign player who is always ready to come into Pakistan and make cricket alive again by taking bold steps.

The Fourth Season of PSL will be one of the competitive tournament in PSL history because many top cricketers are going to participate in PSL 4. Pcb believes PSL is a gateway to bring International cricket back in Pakistan, this is the reason pcb decided to scheduled 8 matches in Lahore and Karachi with the support of local government.
